I thought I'd post this little bit from TSS here, I found the Doctor's reaction quite interesting. Though Martha didn't really give him a chance to reply, I thought we might have gotten an insight into what and how the Doctor hooked Martha up with UNIT.
Doctor (to Colonel Mace): ...Sorry could you stand back a bit?
Colonel Mace: I'm sorry, have I done something wrong?
D: You're carrying a gun. I don't like people with guns hanging around me alright?
CM: If you insist.
Martha: Tetchy (Or something, it sounded like that anyway!)
D: -Looks- What, it's true.
M: He's a good man.
D: People with guns are usually the enemy in my books. You seem quite at home.
M: If anyone got me used to fighting, it's you.
D: Oh right, so it's my fault!
M: Well you got me the job! Besides, look at me!
-Doctor looks at her.
M: Am I carrying a gun?
D: S'pose not.
M: It's alright for you. You can just come and go, but some of us have got to stay behind. -Doctor looks at Martha like he's being told off- So I've got to work from the inside. And by staying inside, maybe I've got a chance of making them better.
-Doctor slowly smirks then grins-
D: Yeah? That's more like Martha Jones.
M: I learned from the best.
D: Well...
(I love the sound the sonic screwdriver made when she tells him to look at her and he does.)
