“It is absolute rubbish that Freema Agyeman has been axed or sacked from Doctor Who. However we do not comment on future storylines.”
On a day where Freema should be celebrated in the press for her lovely first appearance on Friday Night With Jonathan Ross, it instead has been horribly ruined by the cruelty of a tabloid desperate for attention by any means. While we are not an official voice for Freema, we would like to at least express our outrage against The Sun’s nonsense.
Having failed to cash in on their attempts to damage her established co-star, David Tennant, by trying to ignite and ride on rumours of his impending departure from Doctor Who, “The Sun” has turned their eye to a far easier target, an actress who has just barely gotten her momentum going in mainstream media and therefore can less easily defend herself.
Freema had been their darling until recently and they could not print enough nice things to say about her. But she seems to have outlived her usefulness to them since every other paper was also praising her and their voice was being drowned out. So “The Sun” has changed their tactics, now forming their words into a knife and trying to plunge it into her career for no apparent reason but for their own depraved gossip and readership numbers.
Rest assured, there is an ever growing list of logical reasons why what they say is hopelessly incorrect and full of falsehoods, including a recent statement* by Russell T. Davies that he hasn’t even written the Christmas Special yet, let alone any of series four. But The Sun made one glaring mistake in their attempt to trash Freema: there is no-one in the BBC that high in authority who would ever talk to them on that kind of topic. It just wouldn’t happen. Such a person would lose their lucrative job in a heartbeat, it wouldn’t be worth risking discovery.
To attempt to poison Freema’s fanbase by eroding the will to commit to her character emotionally is nothing short of a crime in our book. It’s bad behaviour expected from a bully, not from any entity claiming to be “press”.
So in conclusion, all we can do is ask you to boycott The Sun. There is simply no reason to read it anyway and if this is going to be their new trend why do you need such negativity in your day? Entire towns have successfully boycotted The Sun, we dare say a fandom can do so as well. We are compiling a list of their associated products and companies to boycott, as well as previous claims by them that were complete fabrications so that you may more readily defend yourself against their rubbish and will publish it as soon as reasonably possible. Ask your friends and family to join this action.
We thank you for your loyalty to Freema.
Update: The BBC have now given us a short statement Saturday morning strongly denying The Sun’s claim, which has been placed at the top of this page. In addition at the end of the day we received further confirmation from other solid sources (which unfortunately we cannot name) who assure us that The Sun’s article is untrue.
* Russell T. Davies told Ariel in an interview at the end of April:
“Don’t be stupid, I haven’t even written the script yet ”
The Daily Star reports on 2 June: Freema’s agent confirms she is in series 4
wat a load of rubbish
the sun is the worst newspaper in the world i never buy it anyway coz its rubbish. right now i feel like getting one and ripping it apart
Oh My Days, thank goodness Martha’s not axed!
I was totally shocked when I heard it.
But Now Im very happy that Freema’s staying on!
Good Luck for the rest of the series!
*curses The Sun*
Some of the comments posted here are hypocritically vitriolic. “They should BURN!!”? What kind of a response is that? As for the boycott, well, I doubt it’ll affect the Sun’s sales because, apparently, nobody here buys it, anyway!
There have been rumours about Freema leaving doing the rounds for a while now and The Sun’s only treating Doctor Who in the way it treats everything else - if it can report scandalous gossip, it will. It’ll be some other show’s turn next week, Eastenders hopefully. Having said that, I do hope Freema remains on board for Series 4. I’ve enjoyed her performance and I’d question the production team’s judgement if she’s given the elbow.
Freema is great! Amazing in fact, why the hell would you publish such a horrible thing!
The sun is full of rubbish! I really hate it!
I bet when freema red that, i bet she was crying bless her.! don’t the sun care about people’s feelings??
It has taken freema ages to get a good earning job, and if the sun wants to ruin that then they are seriously pathetic!
Little joke now lol…
The doctor and martha really don’t like the sun..they had problems with it last week, get it?
haha
Rubbish but ya know.
The sun should infact “burn with me”
Grrrrr!
The sun, bewarned, you have upset the nation!
I wish freema and the sun could read this!
Freema would relize how much support she has and the sun would relize ….. NO1 LIKES THEM!
No wonder The Sun is one of the Doctor’s greatest enemies.
Stupid Paper she said on the show that she wern’t leaving. There filming another series with her in (Season 4)
The Sun were accurate when announcing the Daleks/Cybermen cival war from season two and Piper’s departure, which the BBC also denied before releasing the info as legit a few weeks ahead of “Army of Ghosts” and “Doomsday”
The BBC also denied Eccelston was leaving after one season. Guess that means this David Tennant chap should’nt be perfoming the role right now…
Thank you so much for standing up for Freema and writing up such an inspiring and supportive statement! I hope an associate of ‘The Sun’ newspaper reads this and finds out people who admire Freema’s acting are not people to be messed with.
I also hope Freema gets to read this and everyone else’s comments and knows she is not alone. My spirits would certainly lift to see such support gathered towards me. As far as boycotting ‘The Sun’ - I did that years ago, together with all other tabloid newspapers who seek to crush the spirit of individuals.
come on your reaction is totally out of proportion- these rumours follow every doctor who actor ever since eccles left after one series. David has had these rumours follow him since 2005 and handles it with grace which i’m sure freema will too. The ‘denial’ doesn’t seem to deny anything except that its not on bad terms not that she won’t be leaving the show.
I am totally disgusted with the “scum” newspaper and I will not spend another penny on this rag!
Freema’s performance as Martha has been spot on and deserves more respect then she has been shown by that paper!
Hopefully the beeb will back her all the way!
