First Photo of Freema with Team Torchwood

Martha Jones is reunited with Captain Jack Harkness as she teams up with Torchwood to help them solve a series of mysterious deaths in Cardiff - coming to BBC Two in January - we can’t wait, she looks fantastic!

New face for Torchwood, New look for Martha

Pictured here as she steps into the Hub for the first time, a more grown up and worldly-wise Martha brings her medical knowledge and the expertise learnt during her travels with The Doctor to help Torchwood do battle against an alien threat.

Freema Agyeman says: “Martha has grown up a lot since Doctor Who. She’s now a fully qualified doctor and a bit hardened by life experiences. When she finds out that Captain Jack needs her help, she joins Torchwood for a while. She continues to develop her knowledge of alien intelligence, but this time keeping her feet on the ground.

“These will be invaluable skills to take back with her on future adventures with The Doctor. She outgrew The Doctor, in a sense, and so the next time they meet it will be in a more professional capacity. I’m so proud of her journey and who she has become.

“And for me as an actress, it’s a great new challenge to be able to broaden and expand Martha as she develops in other directions for this more adult series. The Torchwood team are fabulous to work with and have made me very welcome.”

Creator of Torchwood, Russell T Davies, says: “Freema is a wonderful actress and we want to give her the chance to add another dimension to Martha. She is going to cause some waves in the team – especially as she joins Torchwood at a point when everything is going to change for one of them.”

Freema is one of many special guest stars appearing in the new series of Torchwood.

Richard Briers is the latest to join the line-up, playing Parker, a reclusive millionaire who is the keeper of alien secrets, much later in the series.

Alan Dale (Ugly Betty, Lost) and James Marsters (Buffy The Vampire Slayer) have also been confirmed.

The second series of Torchwood begins on BBC Two in the New Year and Martha will be starring half way through the series, appearing in three episodes.

Torchwood is executive produced by Russell T Davies and Julie Gardner, Head of Drama, BBC Wales. The producer is Richard Stokes and the series is filmed in Cardiff.

While I think they’re using the term ‘grown up’ wrong (if anyone needs to grow up in S3, it’s the Doctor) I think they’re referring to that first heartbreak you get from the world rather than saying that Martha was immature - because we know she wasn’t. I think they just mean that she ‘grew up’ in that she learned that life (and love) aren’t always fair in this world. Even if you’re deserving.

ps - I heard Martha was coming in as an expert on alien life rather than a doctor per se. But apparently sparks fly anyway.

I totally agree ghost. They’ve used grown up and Martha out grows the Doctor a few times. I’m not sure that’s the correct way to define it. She was already very smart and savy in many ways. Her family members leaned on her as the goto person. She grows up on life and love, like you’ve said, and in her case, yes, it certainly wasn’t fair. She had to based on the season 3 storyline in order to continue on in the next series. I mentioned once before “outgrows the doctor” is probably a bad choice of words also. Do you really out grow a super genius alien who travels in time and space saving the universe? Maybe at some point, you have to move on in your life due to other responsibilities, but then again, you can always get back to the same start point in time. Moving on would probably be due to age or just getting tired of following the Doctor’s lifestyle.
Unbelievable, absolutely gorgeous, yes she is. I just saw her on the CBees kids show (since someone posted them on Giganews) and she was a darling in those as well and a very good story teller.

NICE to see THAT photo huh A shame its not in 3D smile anyway Sorry to sound a bit negetive! but is this just another way of RTD too tie up any loose ends with her part, before the final good-bye? So Freema seems to be saying that her and the Dr will not be So close. THATS SAD, because her feelings for the DR is why the series was so great!!! Poor Freema. Let face some facts. DT has made at least 5 or six TV or film appearances, from the last series to now. John Borrowman (Captain Jack) is guest starring in a lot of TV shows, basically thay really dont need the Work. But Freema, Shes needs them eps like her very life depends on them!! I’m hoping that someone can tell me something a bit more POSITIVE. Yes she is a great actress no doubt about that one, but you need too be working. AM I RIGHT? I’ve already thought about another series she would be great in. That is Spooks another great BBC series, that I hope our friends Worldwide have seen!! As good as 24 any day of the week.

Hey did anybody notice I was first to respond? Huh? Huh? Yay me! But I digress. I hope by grown up, they don’t mean she’s lost her youthful enthusiasm. That was one of the things I treasured most about Martha. Either way, I’m watching this! I just recently received vol 3 of series 3 and Martha/Freema is even better than I thought in Human Nature. Breaks your heart, man. But it’s great television. Even better was her small role in Blink. Though she isnt’ in it much, when she is — she does appear more level-headed and self assured than in Human Nature. Hopefully, by “mature” — that’s what they’re referring to..
