Martha Jones is reunited with Captain Jack Harkness as she teams up with Torchwood to help them solve a series of mysterious deaths in Cardiff - coming to BBC Two in January - we can’t wait, she looks fantastic!
New face for Torchwood, New look for Martha
Pictured here as she steps into the Hub for the first time, a more grown up and worldly-wise Martha brings her medical knowledge and the expertise learnt during her travels with The Doctor to help Torchwood do battle against an alien threat.
Freema Agyeman says: “Martha has grown up a lot since Doctor Who. She’s now a fully qualified doctor and a bit hardened by life experiences. When she finds out that Captain Jack needs her help, she joins Torchwood for a while. She continues to develop her knowledge of alien intelligence, but this time keeping her feet on the ground.
“These will be invaluable skills to take back with her on future adventures with The Doctor. She outgrew The Doctor, in a sense, and so the next time they meet it will be in a more professional capacity. I’m so proud of her journey and who she has become.
“And for me as an actress, it’s a great new challenge to be able to broaden and expand Martha as she develops in other directions for this more adult series. The Torchwood team are fabulous to work with and have made me very welcome.”
Creator of Torchwood, Russell T Davies, says: “Freema is a wonderful actress and we want to give her the chance to add another dimension to Martha. She is going to cause some waves in the team – especially as she joins Torchwood at a point when everything is going to change for one of them.”
Freema is one of many special guest stars appearing in the new series of Torchwood.
Richard Briers is the latest to join the line-up, playing Parker, a reclusive millionaire who is the keeper of alien secrets, much later in the series.
Alan Dale (Ugly Betty, Lost) and James Marsters (Buffy The Vampire Slayer) have also been confirmed.
The second series of Torchwood begins on BBC Two in the New Year and Martha will be starring half way through the series, appearing in three episodes.
Torchwood is executive produced by Russell T Davies and Julie Gardner, Head of Drama, BBC Wales. The producer is Richard Stokes and the series is filmed in Cardiff.
Don’t lose faith DB. Freema still has as good a chance as Catherine Tate, or anyone else for that matter, continuing on in Doctor Who or maybe even Torchwood. No one knows about season 5, but who knows, maybe they could have Freema return again instead of CT if not for the whole season maybe for a number of appearances. We’ll keep our fingers crossed. DB, you are so right about actors and actresses getting work. There ae so many talented actresses out there. So much is pure luck and being in the right place at the right time. Sometimes they may get good roles but the films don’t go anywhere. They don’t get advertised or they get blown away at the box office by some goofy movie. I’d love to see her do well.
Bluemoon, I did enjoy listening to her reading of The Last Dodo…she has such a expressive voice. I almost wish my kids were young again so they could enjoy it with me…that was a long time ago.
martha comes into torchwood from episode 6
Don’t worry bluemoon, we greatly appreciate you around here, you’ve done nothing wrong. I’ve cleared out the messages.
lol, DB, don’t be down. I think good things are in store for Freema no matter what. They *have* messed up sidelining her but seriously, somebody out there will not be making that same mistake.
Just because they dropped the ball on TW and DW doesn’t mean that someone won’t or indeed hasn’t noticed this wonderful and vivacious actress. I’m with bluemoon and klown on this one. Freema can’t fail, imo.
Tks BlueMoon, klown and Ghost, for helping to lighten me up a bit
I’m sure Freema will let her acting do the talking
And Yes it could have been a whole lot worst. They could have killed her off, at the end of series 3. At least theres still time for things to work out the way that would make us all happy.
No problem, DB. We all love Freema to bits which is why we want the best for her and why we get a bit upset when it appears she isn’t being treated as well as we know she deserves. They could have killed her character off, stranded her in a parallel universe or left her on the road some place beginning with ‘C’ but they didn’t: Martha’s coming back, Freema’s going to stun them all over again with her performances and both she and we will benefit greatly from that. Roll on 2008!
Bluemoon how true, “Freema’s going to stun them all over again with her performances…” She’s still stunning me. I’m still watching those season 3 episodes over and over amd over again. By the way, I did listen to the SciFi UK interview where she explained some of the difficulties involved in reading The Last Dodo but said she would gladly do it again. I think that was the same (very long) interview where she indicated she would love to do a movie to learn that process if asked.
Off topic a bit: I also noticed on that SciFi UK site they are currently showing the mini SciFi series “Taken” in the UK. It was absolutely excellent, if you haven’t seen it. I ended up buying the DVDs. SciFi movies tend to run the full spectrum like their TV shows, some are extremely bad (like the hundreds of snake and spider movies they’ve done) but they’ve also done sone extremely good ones like “Taken” and their versions of “Dune” and “Children of Dune”.
Your sure right there Klown!! I saw some of Taken, a long time back. Boy what a series that was. But I think the Granddad of most of todays sci-fi is the old avengers series of the 60’s, this was years infront of anything else. A lot of what they did 40 yrs ago, is being used now!!! WOW. And of course there was Emma Peel
But thats another story
Anyway it seems to me, that it may not be too long until we all see Freema in a film, with a decent part. I dont know if my old heart can put up with seeing 2 hrs of Freema
But there are worse ways to die!!!!!!
Freema looks nice here, I like her jacket.
