I’m just curious that that bird’s eye view shot puts Martha in a cruciform - could it all be about to get a bit needlessly messianic

The cross, as a symbol, was - and still is - used by many faiths before Christianity appropriated it.
TW likes bird’s eye views: the opening sequences of S1 contained aerial shots of Cardiff, for instance. Rather than suggesting religious (or any other) metaphor, imo they add to the sense of disorientation of the viewer and, therefore, the avowed quirkiness of the show itself. It’s self-referential camera work: TW stating its difference through its cameras’ unusual pov which, along with other elements, adds to viewers’ unease on watching. Iow TW is disturbing on many levels.
Anyway, more to the point, what on Earth are they doing to poor Martha? Someone save her, quick!
Oh, this is gonna be awesome! I still hope she’s going to travel with the Doctor in the 2009 specials, though.

You know I totally hear what you’re saying but I’m sticking to my original feeling. Very few people look a cross and immediately think of all the pre-Christianity cultures that used, mostly they think Jesus.
Not to mention TW and DW have an awful lot of Christian mythos/allusion/analogy considering RTD is an atheist.
And usually when they tie a girl up to something they put her arms over her head or behind her back. Very few tie ups require the cruciform shape so I’m drawn to it being significant or them just taking the mick.
She’s not on a cross. She is strapped to the autopsy bed in the Hub. It looks like they are about to do an x-ray or body scan. It probably ties with the medical screen that pops up after. Jack would not hurt her, nor will he allow the rest of the team to do so.
